When we talk about building a prosperous Baringo – A New Baringo – there’s one thing we absolutely have to get right: our health. A strong community starts with healthy families. But to get there, we need to rethink how we approach medical care. We need a system that feels less like a struggle and more like a safety net.

Here is what healthcare in our Baringo Mpya should look like:

Fixing the basics first (Prevention over cure)

True healthcare doesn’t start in a hospital waiting room; it starts in our neighborhoods with clean water and proper sanitation. It is truly heartbreaking to see situations like the recent crisis in Kabarnet, where raw sewage flooded the streets because a major sewer project stalled. When we let our infrastructure fail, we invite disease into our homes. We need to fix our civic amenities first, so we don’t spend millions treating illnesses we could have easily prevented.

Bringing care closer to home

Nobody should have to travel grueling distances when they are unwell. To be fair to everyone, we need fully functional health centers thoughtfully spread out across every single constituency. Whether you are in Tiaty, Eldama Ravine, Mogotio, or Baringo North, good medical care should be right around the corner.

Facilities that actually work

It’s not enough to just put up hospital buildings; they need to be fully alive! We must ensure our clinics and health centers are stocked with the right medications, modern equipment, and dedicated staff. We also need to empower our Community Health Promoters (CHPs)—the unsung heroes of our neighborhoods. By properly equipping them, we make sure quality care reaches every household directly.

Keeping it affordable for everyone

Getting sick shouldn’t mean going broke. Healthcare in Baringo has to be affordable for every single family. By cutting out waste and managing our health budgets honestly, we can lower costs and ensure that a lack of money never stands in the way of life-saving treatment.

Dreaming bigger: Baringo as a medical hub

Once we get these basics running smoothly, we can aim so much higher. Think about how India has become a global destination for fantastic, affordable medical care. Why can’t Baringo do the same at the county level? By investing in specialized talent and top-tier regional facilities, we can become the “Referral County” for our neighbors. This means world-class care for us, plus a booming medical economy that creates great jobs for our youth.

So as we celebrate Madaraka Day today, let’s build a healthcare system that treats us with dignity and sets the standard for the rest of Kenya. We can absolutely do this, together!
